How is overtime calculated?

Overtime, under Türkiye's Labour Law No. 4857, is work exceeding 45 hours per week, and it is paid at a premium: as a general rule each overtime hour is paid at 50% above — one and a half times — the normal hourly wage.

The calculation in three steps

  1. 01

    Find the hourly wage

Divide the monthly gross salary by 225 — the monthly working-hours assumption settled in Court of Cassation practice (30 days × 7.5 hours).

  2. 02

    Find the premium rate

Multiply the hourly wage by 1.5 — that is the 50% premium of the general rule.

  3. 03

    Find the overtime amount

Multiply the premium rate by the overtime hours in the period.

Worked example

For an employee with a monthly gross of ₺30,000 working 10 overtime hours a month:

Hourly wage30,000 ÷ 225 = ₺133.33
Premium rate (+50%)133.33 × 1.5 = ₺200.00
Overtime amount200.00 × 10 hours = ₺2,000

Three things to know

The general rule is not the only rule

Contracts, collective agreements and balancing schemes can change the calculation. For a definitive figure, consult your payroll specialist or legal counsel; this guide explains the general rule.

Without records, the numbers are disputable

Reliable overtime calculation presupposes recorded clock-ins and clock-outs. Figures built from memory or self-declaration invite month-end disputes.

Overtime is a payroll item

The calculated amount is subject to tax and deductions on payroll; the figures here are gross, not take-home.

How Pepteam tracks overtime

Clock records are compared against the shift plan; time worked outside the plan accumulates day by day on the Overtime screen. At period close, who, which day, how much — the breakdown is ready, and clean data goes to your payroll software.

Overtime FAQ

What is the overtime premium?
The general rule is 50%: overtime hours are paid at 1.5× the normal hourly wage. Contracts may set a higher rate in the employee's favour.
Where does the number 225 come from?
It is the monthly working-hours assumption settled in Court of Cassation practice: 30 days × 7.5 hours = 225. The hourly wage is the monthly gross divided by 225.
How is overtime proven?
Recorded clock-ins and clock-outs are the strongest evidence. With a record-based attendance system, overtime speaks through records, not claims.
Is the calculation identical in every company?
The general rule is, but contracts, collective agreements and balancing schemes create differences; consult your payroll specialist for your own case.
Does Pepteam calculate overtime pay on payroll?
No — Pepteam is not payroll software. It accumulates overtime from records and hands payroll-ready data to your payroll system, where the pay itself is calculated.

This guide is for information only; it explains the approximate calculation under the general rule of Labour Law No. 4857. It is not a payroll calculation and may differ under your contract and practice.
